Oral Presentation (Second Part Assignment)

Doug Dubois "The Old Man and the Sea"
This is a photograph taken by Doug Dubois which is called " The Old Man and the Sea". To me this photograph creates this great amount of optimism, hope, isolation from the real overwhelming world that we are part of every single day. It is very calming and peaceful, the ocean carries on the mans body very quietly, it almost seems like the ocean has made the person to fall asleep. The photograph also has a mystical feel to it, its beautiful in its general sense but it also holds puzzling edge to it too. The colors are smoothly rendered, mostly green, bluish and yellow tonalities are used which create this perfect color combination which feels very pleasing to the viewers eye.
The isolation of this man can be also felt, it almost feels like he has done this on purpose cause of his overwhelming life he was accustomed to, and his everyday monotonous routines; he kind of found piece and quietness in the middle of the sea where he can actually rest in quietness and the sound of the sea being his melody in the background. The feel of wanting to be alone is visible throughout the photograph, even the color tonalities express that. The colors are warm pleasant, they welcome you in to join as a viewer, the photographer wants you to feel comfortable when you look at the photography. The focal point is the mans body, that is the first thing you notice at the greenish never-ending water surface. After you spend some time looking at the body your starts to follow the sea level and gets lost far away in the distance where the horizon line ends.

(Pino del Oro #3,© Bert Teunnissen), (Brooklyn Bridge, showing painters on suspenders, Eugene de Salignac)

In this photo i see an old lady that looks lonely and silent. She is left in her house all by herself with the memories from the past. The scenery takes place in the living room which has lots of pictures on the walls and a fake head of a deer hanging on the wall. The lady looks like she is lost in her thoughts and has nothing to look forward anymore in her life.

This a picture probably from the past where workers were coming from all over the world to find a better future in U.S.A and make some money for living. These people are hanging on a steel bars of a bridge and nothing else is supporting them. That is why workers like this in the past were dying pretty often cause there were no safety methods used and nobody cared about them. These people are pretty high up in the air and their life is put at risk at any moment. They are all dressed in pour clothes and look tired the body language looks exhausted but somehow they are still holding up.

Favorite Photographer ?

I really don't have a specific favorite photographer, but here are some photos i find interesting. These photos are from a photographer called Cosmin Bumbut. ( Prolific Romanian photographer just beginning to be known elsewhere. Graduate of the Theatre and Film Academy in Bucharest, and has won awards for both fashion and advertising photography in Romania. His book Transit won "Art Book of the Year" at the Romanian National Book Fair in 2003).

I love how he captures the real essence of the scenery, and makes it not just a photo. He puts a story and makes you think farther of what's really going on. He sets a specific action to make up a whole story out of it, it's really cool. In the basketball court photo i am amazed how he captured feelings and thoughts not just a random snap shot of objects.
